Excerpt from Vandana Shiva's ‘The Killing Fields Of Multi-National Corporations’  Pesticides are war chemicals - every year 220,000 people are killed by pesticides worldwide.  "We are witnessing a massive corporate genocide - the killing of people for super profits. To maintain these super profits, lies are told about how, without pesticides and genetically modified organisms (GMOs), there will be no food. In fact, the conclusions of International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology for Development, undertaken by the United Nations, shows that ecologically organic agriculture produces more food and better food at lower cost than either chemical agriculture or GMOs."

Are All Proteins Created Equal?  Here is the question: isn’t protein from any source, whether from animals or plants, similar in its biological effects?  The short answer to this question is “No.” When a dozen or so animal proteins were compared in animal studies with a dozen or so plant proteins, ALL animal proteins generated higher levels of serum cholesterol than did ALL plant proteins. Similarly, these two forms of protein do not have the same ‘biological value’, a concept that speaks to their abilities to support body growth and their efficiency of utilization > http://www.plantpurefoods.com

W I S E R  A D V I S O R:

From the day you go vegan, you should begin to supplement with vitamin B12 or use a variety of fortified foods. Absorption of B12 drops dramatically as the dose goes up, so if you are supplementing just once a day, you need a fairly high amount—at least 10 ug per day. (If you have been vegan for a while and haven’t been supplementing, you may need much more.) It’s important to choose a supplement that can be chewed or allowed to dissolve beneath the tongue. > http://vitamin-b12-supplements

V e g a n. c o m: Blog by Erik Marcus:

1. Book Review: The CAFO Reader—The Tragedy of Industrial Animal Factories  no other book provides such a thorough introduction to factory farming—and how you can play a role in toppling this system

2. Marion Nestle Can’t be Bought  One effective but slimy tactic industry uses to win positive media coverage is to offer reporters all-expense-paid junkets to exotic locations. The grateful reporter often returns the favor by writing a puff-piece, neglecting proper mention or consideration of the clear conflict of interest.

The trouble with this approach is that some reporters have integrity. Her article mentions the fact that the seafood industry imports immigrants to work, “…12- to 16-hour days, six or seven days a week, for months at a time.” She then covers problems associated with overfishing. If that’s not enough to send Alaska’s fish industry into apoplexy, Nestle ends the article by writing: I haven’t said anything about methylmercury and PCBs, fish safety, international disputes over fishing rights, or issues about organic or farmed fish. For these topics, see the five chapters on fish in > What to EatDescription: http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=vegancom&l=as2&o=1&a=0865477388

3. CSPI Threatens to Sue McDonald’s Over Happy Meal Toys  Never forget that the biggest threat to factory farming and the fast food industry comes, not from vegans or animal rights people, but from the far more mainstream groups funded primarily by conscientious omnivores.  The Center for Science in the Public Interest  is now threatening McDonald’s with a lawsuit regarding its use of Happy Meal toys. Excerpts:

McDonald’s practice of dangling toys in front of children is illegal, regardless of what meal the child eventually gets.  Although the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends diets centered on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy, and lean protein, McDonald’s Happy Meals consist largely of white flour, fried meat, fried potatoes, salt, and refined sugars. Although McDonald’s promotes its health bona fides by talking about the healthier versions of the Happy Meal, the reality is that most of what McDonald’s actually dishes out to kids is simply inconsistent with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and other authoritative nutrition advice > linK

4. Article: >Four FishDescription: http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=vegancom&l=as2&o=1&a=1594202567 author Paul Greenberg on the collapse of bluefin tuna populations

5.  Historic news: > Ohio Humane ballot initiative has been called off in exchange for a string of important animal cruelty concessions (from HSUS’ press release):

§ A ban on veal crates by 2017, which is the same timing as the ballot measure.

§ A ban on new gestation crates in the state after Dec. 31, 2010. Existing facilities are grandfathered, but must cease use of these crates within 15 years.

§ A moratorium on permits for new battery cage confinement facilities for laying hens.

§ A ban on strangulation of farm animals and mandatory humane euthanasia methods for sick or injured animals.

§ A ban on the transport of downer cows for slaughter, etc.

6. City Council of the District of Columbia > ceremonial resolution encouraging city residents to “abstain from animal products on Mondays.”

7. US Food and Drug Administration appears to have concluded that it's too risky for American farmers to carry on > giving their animals antibiotics simply to make them grow fatter, faster.  The reason is to break the link between development of farmyard bacteria resistant to antibiotics and the spread of these "superbugs" through the food chain to hospitals and human communities > Link

8. Utah Health Department “…arsenic from feed is winding up in eggs and the people who eat them.”  Egg eaters who don’t care about cruelty to battery hens may well care about this > Link

9. the psychiatric industry is now pushing the most ridiculous disease they've invented yet- Healthy eating disorder. Orthorexics commonly have rigid rules around eating. Refusing to touch sugar, salt, caffeine, alcohol, wheat, gluten, yeast, soya, corn and dairy foods is just the start of their diet restrictions. Any foods that have come into contact with pesticides, herbicides or contain artificial additives are also out > http:/orthorexia-mental-health

The American Dietetic Association (ADA) wants to create a monopoly on state nutritional licensure. This organization—which lists among its corporate sponsors soft drink giants Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, cereal manufacturers General Mills and Kellogg's, candy maker Mars, and Unilever, the multinational corporation that owns many of the world's consumer products brands in foods and beverages—already has a stranglehold on who can dispense nutritional counseling at the state level.

Cholesterol- and blood pressure-lowering drugs carry serious risks. All medications have side effects. Typically a drug has to be on the market for many years to discern all the long-term risks. The pharmaceutical industry performing their own “research” has a long and consistent record of playing down the discovered dangers of their products and embellishing the advantages. Of course, physicians also give the impression that drugs are necessary, when in fact they are not always… the safest and most effective treatment is a high-nutrient diet-style combined with exercise- Dr. Joel Fuhrman  > www.DrFuhrman.com

Treating Depression > http://selfhealthresourcecenter Diet is Important  It’s important to realize that there are other approaches to the treatment of depression. One of these is food. If you suffer from depression you will benefit if you eat whole foods with a low GI and GL diet.  Avoid Caffeine

Caffeine can increase anxiety and anxiety can lead to depression. Instead, enjoy herbal teas, such as chamomile and peppermint. Avoid or Reduce Alcohol Intake  alcohol can severely exacerbate depression and anxiety and can delete important nutrients, including B vitamins, that are vital in maintaining a sense of wellbeing.  Reduce Saturated Fats Avoid deep fried food and fast food. Turn instead to home cooked lean meats and vegetables

Dr. McDougall Reports: Dr. Andrew Weil’s article in the Huffington Post has led his readers to believe that saturated fats… are better for them to eat than carbohydrates, which are from plant foods. He bases this on a March 2010 analysis that was “published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition”… failed to mention that the National Dairy Council funded this study > http://www.drmcdougall.com/misc/2010other/news/weil.htm

Quoted: Brent Knoll-  Gardens are one of the most powerful ways to connect with nature and the energy that sustains us.  Planting, cultivating and nurturing a garden requires knowledge and compassion or love  for another living thing that in return will provide you with a sense of accomplishment, empowerment and a deeper connection with your food that you eat.  When we truly understand the healing power of a garden we quickly realize that this is the ultimate trade off of our mother earth, we take care of her and her and she humbly returns the favor.

C H E F  J E F F: Take off the tall, white chef hat, pick up a crate of melons for summer health; Locally-grown Nopales are a vegetable, made from the young stem segments of prickly pear, carefully peeled to remove the spines...  Nopal contains a high percentage of carbohydrate fibers known as mucilage and pectin. Mucilage is a substance that does not dissolve, but it does absorb water, so it swells up to form a bulky paste when exposed to fluids. On the other hand, pectin does dissolve in water to become a thick, syrupy liquid. The resulting gooey material is thought to coat and protect the gastrointestinal tract, thereby helping to relieve conditions such as sore throat and irritable bowel syndrome. This coating effect also appears to decrease the absorption of fats and sugars from food. Consequently, both blood cholesterol and blood sugar levels may be lowered.

Responses to watching ravediet.com film ‘Eating’-

I was aware that plant based foods are a healthier choice, but I was not conscious of how terrible animal based foods are to our health.
I will limit my meat intake to once a week and then wean myself off of it entirely.
Starting from today I have decided to change my diet.

This should be played by every school so we can all live a longer and healthier life.
My child will not follow our OLD eating habits.
This movie lets me know that the plant-based diet is one of the keys to lead a healthy life.

David Kirby author of an exposé on factory farming titled ‘Animal Factoryhttp://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=vegancom&l=as2&o=1&a=0312380585’ was interviewed:  In the book, you focus less on the treatment of animals at factory farms, and more on the air, water, and ground pollution produced by such farms. Why?  First of all, people really do like to read about people. And as much as I care about the treatment and well-being of all animals, including livestock and poultry, I felt like the story of what is happening to real people in real communities was not getting the attention it deserved

b.  According to a USDA veterinarian, slaughterhouses have been butchering live, conscious pigs—and senior USDA staffers have attempted to cover up these reports.  The charges by Dean Wyatt, a supervisory veterinarian at the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, detail instances in which he and other inspectors were overruled when citing slaughterhouses for violations such as shocking and butchering days-old calves that were too weak or sick to stand

It’s Policies not Population: ...population numbers, in sum, offer no useful pointers toward policies that should be adopted to tackle climate change. ...the science of climate change came under harsh attack by critics who contend that climate scientists have deliberately suppressed evidence — and that the science itself is severely flawed... the critics — who are few in number but aggressive in their attacks — are deploying tactics that they have honed for more than 25 years. During their long campaign, they have greatly exaggerated scientific disagreements in order to stop action on climate change... Many books have recently documented the games played by the climate-change deniers, including ‘Merchants of Doubt.’ ...the same group of mischief-makers... >http://stopglobalwarming.org/sgw_read.asp?id=1230552192010

W I S E R  A D V I S O R:  Just eat fruits and drink fresh, raw fruit juice for 3 days and be surprised when friends tell you how radiant you look!  Don’t drink Cold water after a meal- cold water will solidify any oily stuff you’ve just consumed, slowing down the digestion.  As this 'sludge' reacts with stomach acid, it breaks down to be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine, turn into fats and may promote cancer.  Ever since I heard about a tiny child chomping down a thick kale stalk I’ve stopped discarding stems of green leafies- into the blender or salad with them!

EarthSave's message echos far and wide.  London's prestigious medical journal, The Lancet, recently came out with a series on health and climate change showing that actions to mitigate global warming can actually benefit human health, recommending a 30% decrease in livestock production!

Top 5 advantages of Eating Raw, fresh, whole fruits, vegetables, and nuts:
1. Raw foods are better quality; therefore you eat less to satisfy your nutritional needs. The heat of cooking depletes vitamins, damages proteins and fats, and destroys enzymes which benefit digestion.
As your percentage of raw foods increases you feel satisfied and have more energy on smaller meals because raw food has the best balance of water, nutrients, and fiber to meet your body's needs.
2. Raw foods have more flavor than cooked foods so there is no need to add salt, sugar, spices, or other condiments that can irritate your digestion system or over-stimulate other organs.
3. Raw foods take very little preparation, so you spend less time in the kitchen.
4. When you are eating raw there's little chance of burns. No burns to tongues, the roof of your mouth, or fingers, and many fewer house fires!
5. Cleaning up after a raw meal is a snap www.chiDiet.com

An extensive list of cruelty-free food items which contain EVERY vitamin, nutrient and mineral that the human body requires.  A majority of plant foods are a meal in and of themselves; açaí, alfalfa sprouts, apricots, asparagus, avocados, broccoli, cacao/chocolate (a bean), chlorella, garlic, green leafy vegetables, nutritional yeast, pears, spirulina, strawberries and wheatgrass appear in several categories.  www.adaptt.org (click ALL ABOUT VEGANISM then click VITAMINS, MINERALS & OTHER NUTRIENTS)

Organic Empowerment 2010: Ten Strategic Local Campaigns  #1: Locally Grown Organic Food  Making affordable, locally and regionally-grown organic food available to all, rich, middle-income and poor, must become a top priority for city and county governments across the nation. Making the transition to organic food and farming stimulates the local economy, improves public health, sequesters enormous amount of climate destabilizing greenhouse gases, and protects the environment. As global warming intensifies, scientists warn that a continuation of current "business as usual" practices will lead to a catastrophic seven degree Fahrenheit temperature rise by 2100. Our only hope is to make energy-efficient and climate-stabilizing organic food and farming the norm rather than just the green alternative > www.organicconsumers.org/

Religious leaders of Christian, Jewish, Islamic, Buddhist, and other faiths have formed a growing movement to transform society from their pulpits by emphasizing the connection between ecology and religion.  Their sermons inspire, educate and mobilize people with topics including climate change, renewable energy technologies and public policy to cut greenhouse gases.  This doesn't mean environmentalism is turning into a religion, Browning explains, but that religion harnesses the power of love and faith, both of which bind us to nature, other humans and the health of our planet and inspire us to take action when these are in danger > takeaction@edf.org

If your body temperature or blood sugar changed by 10 percent you'd be in big trouble. This condition of equilibrium and resistance to change is called homeostasis. It characterizes all self-regulating systems and applies to psychological states and behavior as well as to physical functioning.  Homeostasis doesn't distinguish between change for the better or change for the worse. It resists all change. So... how do you deal with homeostasis? www.chiDiet.com
1) Be aware of the way homeostasis works.
2) Be willing to negotiate with your resistance to change.
3) Develop a support system.
4) Follow a regular practice.
5) Dedicate yourself to lifelong learning

http://tinyurl.com/yb666b9  Scientist Wendy Brown has found that dogs can thrive on a meat-free diet.  As part of the team of scientists who monitored the health and performance of Siberian huskies over a 10-week sled-racing season they concluded that hard-working dogs can perform just as well on a meat-free diet as they do on a meat-rich diet.  However, preparing an adequate vegetarian diet for a dog is more difficult and time-consuming...  As dogs belong to the order Carnivora, it's often assumed that they are exclusively carnivorous, but in fact they are omnivores, belonging to the same superfamily within the Carnivora as the bamboo-eating giant panda and the omnivorous bear

A powerful exposition by Mary O’Brien on so-called "Risk Assessment" ...what is "acceptable" is a political judgment.  What is deemed "acceptable" is a matter of raw political power. Thus risk assessment is not a "scientific" exercise -- it is a highly political mixture of prejudices, biases, guesses, estimates, some scientific facts, and many ethical judgments -- all masquerading as "objective" science. Risk assessment always asks the wrong question: it asks how much damage is safe instead of asking how little damage is possible.  Furthermore, risk assessment conveniently never asks, "Is the proposed activity needed?" It never asks, "Is the proposed activity ethical?"  "All potentially environmentally degrading activities, public or private, should be subject to public scrutiny of alternatives. The public deserves to know that those who pollute, extract, consume, emit, incinerate, or abandon are aware of their technological options for minimizing disturbance of the environment." > riskassessment critique

Veganism's Essential Role In Preventing an Unprecedented Global Catastrophe
Richard H. Schwartz, Ph.D  Synopsis: The world is rapidly approaching an unprecedented catastrophe from global climate change and other environmental threats, and a major societal shift to plant-based (vegan) diets is an essential part of the necessary responses to avoid that catastrophe. Since methane emitted by farmed animals is in the atmosphere for less than 20 years and is 72 times as potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide during that time, reducing the number of farmed animals would have a major, rapid effect in reducing climate change.

To the Editor, NY Times Online: Inhumane Food Policy   Thank you for Nicholas D. Kristof’s plea for food-policy reform (“Lettuce From the Garden, With Worms,” column, June 21). Though factory-style production worsens it, the root problem is animal use. Since using animals is cultural, not part of our biological nature or in any way necessary, animal use is by definition inhumane — unkind where we could as a society choose kind. It is inhumane to humans as well, E. coli or not, since animal protein and animal fat in the diet significantly increase chronic-disease risk, and using animals is a huge environmental problem regardless of method. So the solution is simple. But our colleges of agriculture and our state and federal governments prefer the problem to the solution, responding to years of reasoned requests for change with public relations exercises.
